A roe deer, one of a species under State protection, died from stress after being caught by residents with good intentions in Dandong, Liaoning province.
Residents caught the beast in a courtyard on Sunday but didn not know what it was and took it to experts at a local wildlife protection bureau.
The experts took the deer for further care but found it had died from stress.
"It's really a pity that the roe deer died...it misunderstood our intentions," they said.
