Man who chain-smoked 47 cigarettes now 'stable'
A man who was hospitalised after he smoked 47 cigarettes in succession is now out of danger, doctors at a hospital in Qingdao, Shandong province, said last week.
The 23-year-old man, who hails from Juxian, came to Qingdao two years ago to work as a quality inspector in a garment factory.
He was recently fired "because he kept smoking on the job".
His father forced him to smoke as many cigarettes as possible one after the other so that he starts disliking the taste.
The man passed out after smoking more than two packets in less than an hour and had to be rushed to hospital.

'My dog jumped in a pool and committed suicide'
A dog owner in Dongguan, Guangdong province, claimed his pet jumped into a swimming pool and committed suicide on Monday.
Zhou said he had "cursed and kicked" the dog he had raised for six years when the animal misbehaved the previous day.
"Probably that's why he killed himself," Zhou wept.

Man says he murdered to get the death sentence
A man arrasted for the murder of two people last week told the police he committed the crime so that he could be sentenced to death.
The accused, surnamed Bin, 20, a resident of Guangdong province, allegedly strangled two strangers to death on Dec 1.
Following his arrest last Wednesday, Bin said he had failed to land a job and killed those two people, hoping to be sent to the gallows, as he didn't have the courage to end his own life.

New rule prohibits bus drivers from eating garlic
A new rule that prohibits frontline staff of highway transportation companies from eating garlic and spring onions before work has sparked a debate in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province.
According to the rule, bus drivers, ticket sellers, conductors and guides are not allowed to eat garlic and onions before reporting for work.
Many residents who believe employees in public transport stink of onion and garlic are in favor of the new regulation, but there are several others who believe it is unfair to implement a rule that prohibits people from eating what they like.

A man in Chongqing municipality forced his violent wife to sign an agreement that prohibits her from beating him more than once a week.
The man, surnamed Zhang, 32, said his wife, whom he married six months ago, often beat him up over trivial issues.

Man to pay for friend's death due to drinking
A court in Ningqiang county, Shaanxi province, ordered a man to pay 24,000 yuan ($3,512) as compensation to the family of a man who died of excessive drinking in his house.
The villager, surnamed Zhang, invited his friend, Zhou over to his house for a meal on Oct 7.
Zhou died that night. Doctors said excessive alcohol consumption killed him.
Zhou's relatives dragged Zhang to court, which ordered him to bear the responsibility for his friend's death.

A herdsman who drank continuously for seven days without eating a single bite had to be hospitalized(sic) in Bayannur League, the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, recently.
On Nov 10, the man phoned police, saying he had recently seen a kidnapped woman being sexually assulted and murdered near his house.
When officers rushed to the man's house, they found him completely drunk and incoherent.
They rushed him to a hospital, where he regained consciousness after two days, and told his family he had been drinking continously for a week after his wife left for a vacation.

Mentally ill man mistakes dad for burglar, axes him
A mentally challenged man living with his parents in Qiqihar, Heilongjiang province, mistook his own father for a burglar and chopped him with an axe before throwing his body out of the window last week.

A female dog possibly jumped off a building in Xiyi, Guangdong province and committed suicide just days after its newborn pup dies on Monday.
Local residents said the dog, which gave birth earlier this month, stopped eating after its pup died a few days ago.

China's tallest man traveling in search of wife
Zhao Liang, 27, a resident of Henan proivince, believed to be the tallest man in China, reached Jinan, Shandong province, earlier this week in search of a bride.
The 2.5-m0tall former basketball player received more than 2,000 responses from all over the country to his advertisement for a wife, which he had published in a newspaper a couple of months ago.

Teenage lovers on heat attack annoyed taxi driver
Two teenage lovers attacked a taxi driver who told them to stop fondling each other in the backseat of his cab in Shijiazhuang, Hebei province, last Tuesday.
According to the driver, the two youngsters wouldn't stop "touching and caressing" each other all the way to a hotel near the city railway station.
The driver asked them to stop and just as soon as he dropped them off at their desired hotel, the couple pounced on him and started hitting him.
Police arrived on the scene and asked the youngsters to apologize to the driver and pay for his medical treatment.

Residents kill rare deer with kindness
A roe deer, one of a species under State protection, died from stress after being caught by residents with good intentions in Dandong, Liaoning province.
Residents caught the beast in a courtyard on Sunday but didn not know what it was and took it to experts at a local wildlife protection bureau.
The experts took the deer for further care but found it had died from stress.
"It's really a pity that the roe deer died...it misunderstood our intentions," they said.

Police in Jinan, Shandong province, detained a man for kissing a woman by force last week.
Xu, the accused, broke in to his neighbor's apartment and kissed her while she was brushing her teeth last Thursday.

A drunken man fell into a village-type dry toilet last week and slept inside until he was rescued the next morning.
Fortunately, another man spotted him and phoned the firefighters, who carried the drunkard out of the toilet pit and rushed him to a hospital in Hohhot, the Inner Mongolia autonomous region.
To thier surprise, he told them that he could not remember what happened to him after regaining conciousness early the next day at the hospital. The doctors found no injury on him.

Boy attacks friend who farts at birthday bash
Police in Xiamen, Fujian province, rescued a college student who was attacked by his classmate after he farted during his birthday celebrations at a restaurant last week.
Wu, who was invited to Hong's birthday bash at a seafood restaurant along with seven other classmates, farted out loud and swore he would do it again when Hong flung a chair at him.

Three drug addicts in Huaji county, Guangdong province, were detained after seeking police protection from a drug-induced hallucination.
Two men and a woman phoned a police hotline from their hotel room claiming someone who wanted to kill them was chasing after them. Police arrested the individuals after discovering the addicts had hallucinated the threat because of a drug overdose.

A heavily intoxicated man decided to push his car all the way home in Tianjin municipality, fearing he might get arrested for drunken driving, last week.
However, while passing through his neighbour's home in Baodi, the man collapsed and passed out beside his car.

Man to stand trial for burying 'dead' friend alive
A man in Huichang, Jiangxi province, will stand trial for intentional homicide after he buried his friend, who accidentally shot himself in the head, while he was still alive.
On Jan 13, the accused man and his friend, Liao, were trying out a new shotgun they had recently acquired when Liao accidentally shot himself and lost consciousness.
His friend thought Liao was dead and buried him to aviod complications with the law.
Liao's body was discovered days later, and suffocation and an autopsy confirmed the deceased died of suffocation and not a gunshot.
Police filed a charge sheet against the accused last Tuesday.

Residents of Shanghai successfully rescued hundreds of cats from traders last Sunday.
Cui, a cat lover, found traders shipping cats in cages near her home and took a taxi to follow the truck. She also informed other animal lovers, and four hours later, they finally stopped the truck with 21 cages, each cramped with more than 20 cats.
Many of the cats were wearing collars.
The cats were going to be sold off to restaurants.
The driver of the truck was arrested.

#Chongqing: Man jumps into river to escape nagging wife
A 45-year-old man jumped into the Yangtze River from a ship because he was frustrated with his "constantly nagging" wife on Tuesday.The last words Zhou spoke before jumping into the river were: "I want some peace."
Everyone on the ship thought Zhou would drown in the roaring water. However, he swam to shore and the local police found him.
Seeing him alive, his nagging wife, surnamed Hu, 42, hugged him and promised to try and keep quiet.

A garbage collector who fell into an uncovered drain in Fuzhou, Fujian province, chose not to scream for help, instead decided to chuck out waste he had collected to attract attention.
After falling into the drain last Tuesday, the man started throwing empty plastic bottles out of the drain, hoping passersby would notice and pull him out.

A woman in Guiyang, capital of Guizhou province, installed a device in her house that shields cell phone signals in a bid to stop her husband from going out with his friends to get drunk at nights.
Then woman surnamed Huang, 33, said she was frustrated because her husband, the chief of an advertising firm, recieved phone calls from friends every night asking him to come out for a drink.

Jilin police last week arrested a man who hid in the mountains for 19 days after killing his girlfriend and her lover.The accused confessed to the murders, saying he saw them in a compromising position in this girlfriend's dormitory earlier this month.

A robber who tried to sexually assault his victim in Shenyang, Liaoning province, last Sunday gave up the idea after the latter told him she had a kid to take care of.
The incident took place outside a public toilet near the woman's dormitory in the city.
After the robber, armed with a knife, snatched the woman's cell phone, he tried to rape her. She begged him to let her go as she has a 3-year-old child waiting for her.
